ECU tuning in simple terms is extracting the file that contains the data that has been

stored on your cars computer, and examining the data to create a new optimized file by adjusting the parameters to create a fine tuned file that will allow the vehicle to gain more horsepower and torque at the same time reducing the carbon foot print by running more efficiently.

 

When looking into the data pulled from the ECU we will look at parameters like fuel pressure, boost pressure, ignition advance, when adjusted correctly it will unlock power as well as fuel efficiency.

 

ECU tuning will improve power and torque figures, increase throttle response and widen the power-band, resulting in a more flexible engine and a much sharper drive.

Another major benefit is a reduction in fuel consumption. Extra torque at the bottom of the rev range requires less throttle input on acceleration and when maintaining steady speeds.  The vehicle can also be driven in a higher gear at slower speeds, thus reducing revs, and this also applies to driving when fully loaded, towing or driving through elevation changes

The obvious question of course is: ‘Why don’t carmakers fine-tune their own ECU’s?’ Well, large manufacturers sell vehicles across various markets that have extreme climates as well as different air density levels, different tax/emission regulations and different fuel quality. They have to take all these factors in to consideration and therefore need to make substantial compromises by creating a one size fits all ECU program for that particular vehicle model.

 

Lets use this analogy, you have 2 perfect 30 year old males, you put one in Toronto to run 20km in the fall season, and you put the other 30 year old to run 20km in the Texas heat, would they be performing the same, that is exactly how the car and vehicle manufacture want you to think... that they will perform the same. they have created the same ECU file no matter where the car is being shipped to, not taking into consideration of the air quality, fuel quality and climate that the vehicle needs to operate into. This is where ECU tuning can help, by adjusting and fine tune these parameters that are stored in the ECU to create a custom file for that vehicle and how it is used.
